Final Piece Selection

"Perhaps it's impossible to wear an identity without becoming what you pretend to be."-Google

In this image, I incorporated Laura Williams work with the photo frame in the middle of the figure. The snow made the image more crisp and defined. When I photo shopped these images I made it more shadowed in areas where it was slightly darker and, because the snow lightened the whole image I kept that and turned the saturation down a little to make it seem more empty and set the mood of the image. To link this to the idea of identity I chose a quote that links with the photo frame illusion and the figure in the centre.
The photo frame shows the background through the figure and this symbolizes how people hide behind something else, a different persona, a different character, true create a different identity. As I wanted this to be the focus I chose to stand in the middle of image and make the figure stand out against the background.

"When I discover who I am, I'll be free." -Google

For this image, I edited it to make the sepia more enhanced and brighten the right side of the image with the sun on that side. to the left of the image is the blurred, running figure which represents someone running away from themselves, other people, the person they have become etc. To link this to my artist,  Francesca Woodman, I used movement to make the figure appear blurred and distorted. To incorporate the idea of identity in this image I paired the quote with it "When I discover who I am, I'll be free."  This symbolizes the idea of someone running away from their true identity, or running from the person they pretend to be. The running represents the idea of escapism and freedom, and finding someone's true identity rather than the person they have become.

"Identity does not grow out of action until it has taken root in belonging." -Google

In this image I wanted to portray the way we can fantasise and picture ourselves in different ways and how we can twist our true characters to become something else. I chose to wear black as I wanted this to represent the running away and becoming of someone/something different. I used Photoshop to represent this idea, by photo shopping different surroundings into the photo frames. The sun reflections also add to the mystery and fantasy feel to the image and create a more vintage and worn photograph. I made the colour composition more sepia, as I wanted it to look old, and I also increased the vibrancy to make the background of the image more crisp to make it stand out.

"Your identity should be so secure, that when someone walks away from you, they don't take you with them." -Google

In this image I didn't use the movement element or the photo frames as I wanted to develop my theme of identity and how we can mask our identities with different 'safe places'. I paired the quote with this image as it symbolises the idea that we can choose to make ourselves feel more secure and hide our insecurities by, for example in this image, fiddling with your hair, or pulling your sleeves down to cover your hands, or biting your nails. These are all things that can make our insecurities feel secure, and make your true identity secure as well as hidden. Furthermore, for example, we can make ourselves feel comfortable even though the reality is that we are anxious or uncomfortable with our own identity, through our insecurities. We can hide our true selves and our true feelings or identities by distracting people with our 'safe place' (fiddling with your hair, or pulling down your sleeves). This quote  I got from the internet , and I think it reflects the way we cling onto our true identity and try so hard to hide or mask it that we don't want to let it go so we keep it as secure as possible.

"Sometimes the only way you can find yourselves, is to get completely lost." -Google

In this image I chose to Photoshop in some different surroundings and backgrounds into the photo frames to create the theme of identity and portray it in the way that we try and hide behind the surrounding or environment that we are in. I kept the background quite dark and the focal point is the figure in the centre and the photo frames. I chose not to use the movement aspect in this image as I wanted to enhance the images within the photo frames and also the figure itself and I didn't want any distractions or overcrowding in the photograph. The snow in this image brightens up the centre of the image whilst keep the background crisp and eerie.

''We know what we are, but not what we may be." -Google

In this image I chose to create a bedroom scene outside (taking you out of your comfort zone) to represent the idea of a 'safe place' (i.e. the bedroom) and using the photo frames to make it seem as though you hide away in your safe place or your secure surrounding and don't actually show your true identity. The figure in the background represents your true identity that you try to hide, behind the safe and comfortable background of your bedroom, or your friends, or fiddling with your hair, or biting your nails. The snow makes the image much more crisp and bright but allows the darkness to come from the cornered hedge onto the bed. I also turned the saturation down to create a more dull and eerie, haunting feel to the image.

"Identity cannot be found or fabricated but emerges from within when one has the courage to let it go." -Doug Cooper

In this image I chose to be outside and use an old mirror, that I hung on the outside of my shed. I then positioned myself looking down at my hair wrapped around my fingers inside the mirror. I then edited this image to make them seem more sepia and a bit more old and worn. I chose to do this shoot outside so that it portrayed the eerie side to looking at your reflection. The quote underneath this image I got from the internet and it symbolises the fact that we can't always find or change our identities we have to accept them and live with them. I was looking down and holding my hair to represent the way we have to let our identities go and reveal our true identities to people so that we don't live in the fantasy of a 'perfect' life or 'perfect' person, which turns into the 'perfect' lie. I also turned the saturation down to make it seem a little darker and more dull.

These are my final selection of images that I am using for my final piece. I chose to use 8 images that each represent the quotes underneath them. For my final piece I incorporated the theme of identity throughout the images and I paired them with quotes from the internet and books that relate to my over all idea. I used a slow shutter speed throughout my final piece, however I wanted some of the images to be in focus as I think it adds to the narrative around my final piece and clarifies the piece as a whole.
For some of the images, for example, the hands and hair images, I chose for them to be still and in focus, to enhance the emotion behind them and bring the piece together alongside the other movement photographs.
The original quote "Identity cannot be found or fabricated but emerges from within when one has the courage to let it go" was the original narrative around my images and then I decided to find more quotes that relate to each individual image, to emphasise the  idea of identity further.
I chose to use 8 photos to show a variation of photos and also when I present these images I will use different types of photo frames and different sizes too, so that you see the variation throughout the piece, and this also symbolises the idea of identity and the way we view ourselves as being different and distorted to someone else's view of ourselves.
